What is Lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin (LF) is a 75 to 80-kDa metal-binding glycoprotein that is normally synthesized inside all mammals, including humans. It is a single-gene product (“bio-replenishment”) that is essential for life. LF concentration is highest in milk/colostrum, but it is also present in various other exocrine secretions (i.e. tears, saliva, sweat, cerebro-spinal, bronchial, gastric, seminal and vaginal fluids, etc.) that bathe the mucosal surfaces.

What is the role of Lactoferrin?

LF is a natural bioactive molecule with a multi-functional role in several important physiological pathways, such as:

  1. Reinforcing innate host defense (immunity)
  2. Promoting healthy intestinal flora/function (digestion)
  3. Regulating cellular metabolism (energy/bio-redox)
  4. Boosting fertility (reproduction)
  5. Supporting physiological development (growth)

Why do we need Lactoferrin?

LF turnover in humans is normally 60 mg/day. However, due to factors like poor diet, stressful lifestyle and toxic environment, we consume more than our body can produce. This imbalance can lead to LF deficiency, causing a host of health problems such as increased susceptibility to/ decreased ability to fight off infections and irregular digestion. To prevent these health problems, it is important to routinely replenish the body with pure and bio-functional LF.
